Right before the carpool lane starts in Redwood City, traffic started building and didn't get resolved until near Highway 85. So I exited Lawrence Expressway and grabbed dinner to let traffic ease. I'm not really seeing much of an impact or improvement with the signals. "... My commute Tuesday night from Woodside Road to San Antonio Road was better. Very slow. The trip from Embarcadero Road south to Brokaw Road took 39 minutes, and it was bumper-to-bumper almost the entire 13 miles. This compares with 42 minutes on Monday, Nov. 2, before the metering lights were turned on, and a snappy 27 minutes on Nov. 9, the first day lights began working. Tuesday was faster with meters on, but not as fast as I hoped.Traffic on Tuesday is almost always heavier than on a Monday, and highway watchers say I should have expected the trip to take at least an extra five minutes from my 27-minute test a week earlier.Meters at Embarcadero and Oregon Expressway weren't much help. It took three minutes to clear the light, but another six minutes to get onto the freeway. It does seem smoother, but it still bunches up at the entrance to 87, mostly due to all the cars entering 101 at De La Cruz and those cars having to cross drivers exiting 101 at 87 (me). Often my speedometer is at 10 mph or less. My commute between El Monte Road and Highway 92 on I-280 seems to have gotten worse. Does Caltrans show a shift in traffic from 101 to 280?LawrenceA It's too early to tell. But Rich-the-San-Mateo-County-Man said if some drivers are taking 280 instead, "that is not bad because there is more available capacity on 280 than on 101."Q Do timberland boots know if there will be metering lights at 3rd Avenue onto north 101? This is an awful merge of two ramps onto 101 and causes a backup all the way to 92.Prashant ShahSan MateoA Yes, meters will be added in a year or so north of Highway 92 if the state budget mess doesn't delay funding. Northbound lights will also be added at Peninsula Avenue, Broadway and Anza Boulevard. Southbound lights will be added at Broadway and Poplar Avenue.
