Default Unused stuff & performance issues

I don't know if any of you have noticed, but lately there have been a few performance issues with the forum. They seem to be caused by excesive requests to the database server.

What do these issues look like to users? Errors like "server too busy", "too many connections", and general slowness of the site (remember that your connection affects this too)

To correct this I've done a few things
1) Increase number of connections allowed
2) Disable unused things that cause performance issues
a) members list - no one really uses it, if you want to show your home page then put it in your signature
b) search for non members is now disabled.
c) disabled the calendar. It was never used much by our users. Perhaps in the future it can be enabled again upon user request.
d) disabled showing the users online list to unregistered members
e) disabled a few more things for unregisters/banned/waiting confirmation users. All they need to be able to do is view threads really
f) disabled related threads (a real resource hog)

The next item that's up on the chopping block is the classifieds script. It's really under utilized by users. It will probably be going away soon but I haven't decided yet. Don't worry though, more usable forum features are on the way.

I don't expect there to be any more performance issues, but if there are I've got a group of guys that get paid to sit on their arse until I yell at them to fix something. I'll keep my eye on it and see how things go.

Enjoy!

Not long after I posted this message about performance issues there was another issue which cropped up. The datacenter was asked to checked the hardware of the server and they were not able to log into the console without the server crashing.

It was determined that the motherboard of the server had outlived it's time and was giving up on itself. The drive was swapped into a new server (yay for new hardware) and everything is working beautifully now.
