Default Reed help

I just got a bike and the first time I really had it out and rode it hard for acouple hours straight it just died when full throttled. When I got it home and took it apart it got good spark and gas but wouldnt fire at all. when i took the carb off i noticed there wasnt any reeds? Its a 49cc cateye bike. I cant find the manual that i got with it, but wouldnt the engine not run at all without the reeds in it?

Any help is appreciated, i work with engines, but this is the first time ive ever really got into a little motor like this

thanks, Mike

Welcome to the forum.

You can read the article I wrote on how reeds work here http://www.pocketbikeforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=242

X-bikes (cateyes) are a piston port motor and do not have reeds.

If you have spark and fuel, then there isn't much left to getting an engine running. Make sure it's not seized due to lack of oil. Make sure the plug is getting fuel by trying to start it and then taking the plug out.

If the plug is getting fuel and it's not seized then take a look at air restriction and compression loss. You could have blown the head or a gasket.

Good luck.

If i prime the carb and give er gas when trying to start it the spark plug comes out nice and wet. It seems to have the same compression but i dont have a compression check tool.

I can spray in carb cleaner and the bike will fire but it will die as soon as it burns off. does it sound like a blown head?

guess its time for a big bore

there may be something stuck inside of the carb through the little holes where gas toes from the float just take an air compressor and blow air through it that was the case mine once.

It sounds like the timing is off but I don't know how the timing works on a two stroke. Can someone explain how the timing works on a two stroke. I think it has something to do with the keys.

I have the same problem with my old bike I took the whole sucker apart and found nothing... worked with it for about a week and came out with nothing... but that automatic start crap you use on big trucks work great.. I quick shot of that and she runs... I recomment that crap to no one, its dangerous in a little this like that
