| Hi I'm new here Be nice to me | Help - I am trying to replace my carburetor on my pocket atv. I tried to remove the two main phillip screws that mount it to the motor. The screws seemed very tight and i managed to strip the screw heads in my attempt to loosen them. This is obviously a problem now in getting the carb off. Any help on getting these screws off would be appreciated! Thanks in advance. |

| Administrator Friends call me God ;) | You have a few options none of them are cheap but they are the right way to go. Find yourself a snap-on dealer and buy a special bit that is designed for just this purpose. I think they're about $25-30. Sears (and if you're in Canada Canadian Tire too) also make a tool for removing stripped screws. They may be in a kit form so it might cost more. You can drill out the screw and tap it for a new screw. If you have a tap set this won't cost you anything, otherwise they're not cheap sets. Take the complete motor out and take it to a very good garage or machine shop. They'll be able to take the screws out for you in a jiffy, even if they have to drill and tap they've got all the equipment to do it right there. (best choice if you're not mechanically inclined) Those are the good choices to make. Now on to the bad. Vice Grips, you can try, but you could break the head off the screw which means you'll need to drill it and tap it. Is it big enough to grind a slot into it? If so then you could grind the head of the screw so you can use a very large standard (slotted) screwdriver. Mess this up and you're looking at drilling and tapping. The good and the bad, hopefully it works out for you. |

| I know what you mean man... I did that to one of the bolts to hold the motor in the head broke off... I went and got this broken screw remover for 10 buck at canadian tire... those are right cheap.... drill a hole with a drill bit and then drill that sucker in.... the screw remover is hard to take off the bolt though.... now thats easy and cheap... and to get a new bolt just go to a hardware store with the broken one and tell them you want the same size... to take it out was fast and easy... make sure you have a titanium bit or better.... found that out the hard way |

| Decent Rider | I did the same thing. And because there are no threads on my carb. I'm going to drill the head of the screw pull the carb and jamb two nuts on whats left of screws.(I don't trust those screw removers). If your in winnipeg you can call fasenall and match up some new screws. |
