Unhappy no power

Hello everyone,

My pocket bike's engine seems to run okay without load. When I rev it with the rear wheel off the ground, it accelerates correctly and drives the rear wheel just fine. It even roars to acceleration!

But when I put the rear wheel on the ground the bike does not even move forward (this is even without me sitting on it, just the weight of the bike itself would prevent the bike from moving forward)

I thought it was a slipping clutch and I cleaned the friction shoes and drum to make sure there was not any glazed material causing the clutch to slip. But I am not sure it did the job. (May still be a clutch problem) I did the cleaning as follows:
a- filed the 'brake shoes' to remove excess of glaze and
b- used rotary grinder with fine emery cloth to clean drum surface.

My questions are:
1- How do I know if there is enough friction material on the brake shoes to effective grab the drum? What should the thickness of the brake shoes be? It looked okay to me, but I am not sure if there is a thickness requirement.
2- Why is the drum surface so shiny? It seems to me that it can never give good friction between the brake shoes and the drum for proper torque. Should I roughen the drum surface for better traction?

Does anyone have any ideas? I heard suggestions about 1- inadequate fuel supply, 2- carburator porblem and 3- loss of compression but I don't know how to check for those as I don't know what the compression should be on the bike. There are no technical data on the bike, period.

Appreciate any thoughts on this.
Alex

sand the shinny part of the inner brake drum with 320 sand paper to ruffin it up a bit, make circular motions, that will help it grab,i have no idea the correct thickness of the pads, take the spark plug out and insert your pinky in the hole and pull the pull start slowly,if you can feel it pushing it out somewhat it has good compression,if you have anymore that i might be able to help you with just ask

does the motor bog when the tire is on the ground when you rev it up?

Hi Cag,
Thanks so much for your input. I will do what you suggested. Yes, the motor bogs when I put a load on the clutch but it does not stall. Sounds as if it is trying to transfer to clutch drum but is slipping. All the signs are there!

I have another question for you. There is a bolt on top of the space where the drum is located but it is just an access hole. Do you know what the bolt is there for? So weird, does not seem to have any purpose and yet, it must be doing something! Why would anybody put in a access bolt without function?

Thanks,
Alex

Hi Cag 07,

Found out what the bolt is for. Apparently it's for putting oil into the gearbox (from drum to drive sprocket), but I don't know what kind of oil or weight. Do you have any idea about this and have you put oil into your gear box. If so, how much? Should it be gear oil or light weight oil?

Also, I did as you suggested on the clutch drum. Really roughed it up and roughed up the friction material on the shoes as well. It still does not have power to pull up. Same symptoms, motors bogs but does not stall.

Would you have any other suggestions I could try? This is so strange!

Thanks,
Alex

don`t put oil in that hole!lol is this bike you speak of a cag? if so that bolt hole is just that a bolt hole both mine has them why? dunno.. you have no gear box its 1 gear with cent. clutch the only oil that goes into the motor is the mix for fuel, it lubes everything are you sure your rear break isn`t holding the motor back?if it is the rear brake being to tight will keep the rear wheel from turning and it holds the motor back just like your problem
