| Administrator Friends call me God ;) | Today's article is going to be on gasoline. That stuff that makes the world go round. For now we'll just call it go-juice So you take your stock cag and go to the gas station and figure, I'm gonna buy premium cuz it'll give me more power. If you've ever said this then pick up your keyboard and hit yourself in the head with it. So what are the differences between premium and regular? Price is one answer, octane rating is the other. We all know about prices so we'll talk about octane for a minute. The octane rating of go-juice tells you how much the fuel can be compressed before it spontaneously ignites. When go-juice is ignited by compression and not because of spark, it causes knocking in the engine called detonation. The higher the octane rating, the more resistant to detonation. Detonation is bad. Real bad. It can blow out your rings, or even pop a hole in your piston. So why use premium in your pocketbike? The answer depends on your compression ratio. The higher the compression the higher the octane rating you'll need so you don't blow up your motor. A stock cag should only need regular fuel, a banshee with a head job and 18:1 compression is gonna need premium at least, maybe even a bit of octane boost. So is higher octane fuel better for your bike? Nopers. In fact higher octane fuel is harder to ignite. This can actually rob you of power! So unless you're upping the compression ratio on your bike, all you really need is regular go-juice. Are the differences big? Not really, you probably won't notice it on a stock bike. A modded out bike with big compression will however. A neat fact about gasoline from howstuffworks.com "If it were possible for human beings to digest gasoline, a gallon would contain about 31,000 food calories -- the energy in a gallon of gasoline is equivalent to the energy in about 110 McDonalds hamburgers!"
