| Administrator Friends call me God ;) | As many of you know I posted yesterday on the server downtime/outage. The hard drive in the web server crashed and a new drive was installed. Today the system went through a TON of updates to the operating system and software and is still being worked on right now. Posts and signups yesterday were lost due to this work. I apologize for any inconvenience this caused anyone. We are back up now and everything should be normal. The web server (apache) may experience a few restarts but that should only cause a few bumps in your connections. Let me know if you experience any other issues. |

| Administrator Friends call me God ;) | This wasn't anticipated, it was a hard drive failure which really caused some issues not only for me but for my customers. Add the fact that 3 different sets of people were working to resolve the issue so timelines aren't as close as they could have been. The datacenter attempted to resurrect the drive to no avail. The drive still had the data, but wouldn't boot. A new drive was installed and an OS was fired up. The server admin restored the data and I updated software. (To answer your question, yes I do remote backups, just in case) It was at this point that my own computers power supply died (around 8PM Sunday). Monday morning by 10AM a new power supply was installed and I'm back online. Then the fun really began. The server admin emailed me the previous night, which I never got to see due to my outage, and told me the OS was out of date. So the email went out to the datacenter to toss in a new CD with the OS, which of course happened to be a different OS (the old one was too outdated). If I knew this that night everything could have been done right away. This necessated another format and install of the OS which for some reason occurred at 4AM this morning. Then the whole process began again of installing necessary software and doing updates which are still happening right now. I hope this gives everyone a small glimpse of what can be involved with running your own server. This kind of thing doesn't happen often but it does. Of course every time one of these people do something it costs more money. This weekend could very well hurt, but such is life in the world of business. |
